A man languished for hours under a tractor and held his head above water until he was found on a rural Illinois property.

Family discovered the man on July 20, approximately three hours after his tractor overturned in a body of water and pinned him underneath, according to the Harvard Fire Protection District.

Rescuers dragged equipment using pickup trucks or vehicles with all-wheel drive for nearly a mile onto the unincorporated Harvard property to reach the man, officials said. They used heavy machinery to lift the tractor off the man and rescue him within 25 minutes of arriving.

The man was flown to a hospital in Rockford and was in critical condition, firefighters said.

No other injuries were reported.

Harvard is about a 75-mile drive northwest from Chicago.
