Grieving cat lost her kittens at Texas shelter. Then came a ‘freezing’ tiny baby

Two cats in Texas managed to find solace in each other after one lost her baby, while the other lost their mother.
Bellatrix, a tortoise-shell mama cat with a grieving heart, and Scampi, a little kitten barely bigger than a finger, managed to find each other in the Gulf Coast Humane Society in Corpus Christi.
“When Bellatrix was dumped at our shelter, she was pregnant and scared. We gave her a quiet space and held hope in our hearts for her little family. About a month later, she delivered two tiny kittens,” the shelter said in a July 15 Facebook post.
“Unfortunately, both kittens passed away the very same day. Her grief was deep. She had love left in her heart, but no one to give it to.”
Then, a tiny orange fur bubble was brought in.
“Then came Scampi. He was no more than a few days old, alone, freezing, found without a mother or siblings in sight. A tiny baby who wouldn’t survive without a mom. And Bellatrix… she was a mom with no baby to love,” the shelter said.
“We introduced them, holding our breath. The moment she saw Scampi, something in her changed. She didn’t hesitate. She knew.”
Kittens under 1 pound without mothers have a high mortality rate because they can’t eat on their own or stay warm.
“From that moment on, Bellatrix became the mother Scampi needed. She stays curled around him through the night, watches every move he makes, and makes sure he’s always warm and safe,” the shelter said. “She’s fiercely protective. Unbelievably tender. Completely devoted.”
Both Bellatrix and Scampi are currently in a foster home and “thriving,” the shelter notes.
