15-year-old landscaper opens fire on co-workers at lunch, killing 2, TX cops say
A 15-year-old member of a landscaping crew is accused of shooting his co-workers, killing two, while they were having lunch, Texas police say.
Clute police officers responded to a call about a shooting on the community’s west side at 1:18 p.m. Monday, July 7, and arrived to find three men with gunshot wounds, the police department said in a news release.
Officers say a five-person landscaping crew was on a lunch break when the teen “pulled out a handgun and started shooting at his co-workers.”
Three were hit by gunfire, but a fourth man escaped uninjured, according to police. The teen chased after the man, firing at him as he ran away, officers said.
Police spoke with witnesses at the scene and were able to find the teen a short distance away and take him into custody at 1:29 p.m. — 11 minutes after receiving the 911 call, according to the department.
“It appeared that the juvenile suspect was suffering from a medical episode” and was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.
Of the three men shot, police say one was pronounced dead at the scene and two others were transported to a hospital, where a second died. The third man is expected to survive, according to police.
“The juvenile suspect was released from the hospital and transported to the Brazoria County Juvenile Detention Center where he will be charged with numerous felonies,” the police department said.
The teen was the only non-adult member of the landscaping crew, which was based out of Houston “and had no ties to Clute or Brazoria County,” police said.
It’s unclear what may have motivated the shooting.
Clute is a roughly 50-mile drive south from Houston.
