‘Beautiful’ girl dies after she’s left in hot car while mom works, TX cops say
A girl who was left in a hot car while her mom worked has died, and an investigation is underway in Texas.
“A 9-year-old, beautiful little girl has lost her life,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said during a news conference.
Deputies were called to an industrial complex on the outskirts of Houston on July 1 for reports of an unresponsive girl, Gonzalez said in a news release.
The girl’s 36-year-old mother started her work shift at 6 a.m., and she left the 9-year-old in the car with water and the windows partially down, the sheriff said. When she got off work at 2 p.m., she found the girl unresponsive in the car.
The girl was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to Gonzalez.
“A tragic reminder, once again, of how dangerous it is to leave unattended children in a vehicle for any amount of time,” Gonzalez said at the news conference.
The car was backed into a parking spot and had a sun shade, which may have prevented anyone from noticing a child was inside, according to Gonzalez.
When asked if there was anything that prevented the girl from exiting the vehicle or getting help, Gonzalez said he didn’t want to speculate and was still investigating.
“My experience typically has been when a child’s left unattended and this might happen it might be a younger child, so I don’t know, I wanna get the facts,” he said.
Gonzalez said it’s unclear if lack of child care resources for the mom played a role in why the girl was left in the car during her work shift.
“We can be sympathetic to the fact that there’s hardship, you know, it’s not lost on me that there’s people going through tough times,” he said during the news conference. “Maybe she has to make ends meet and keep, you know, food on the table. … The point is… risk of death or harm, there’s just no reconciling that in my mind.”
Temperatures in Houston reached 94 degrees July 1, according to Weather Underground.
Gonzalez said no charges have been filed at this time and authorities are still investigating.
