A woman from California was pronounced dead after being pulled from the ocean in Hawaii, officials said.

Stacy Coon, 59, from Oroville, began calling out for help from the water at Whittington Beach Park on the island of Hawaii on the afternoon of June 22, the Hawaiʻi Police Department said in a news release.

She’d been swimming and was about 40 yards offshore, police said.

Others at the beach “entered the water and brought her to shore where she appeared to become unresponsive,” police said.

Bystanders performed CPR until first responders could get there, police said, but “Coon remained unresponsive.”

She later was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to police, who said an autopsy was being requested.

Oroville is about a 70-mile drive north from Sacramento.
