Two children are dead after a boat capsized in a Texas lake, according to authorities.

Around 8 p.m. June 22, a boat on Cedar Creek Lake lost its power and capsized, Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse told KLTV. First responders arrived at the scene around 9:30 p.m.

Due to the boat being overloaded, as well as the winds and waves, it capsized and began to sink, he said.

The boat was carrying 10 adults and two children, a 3-year-old girl and a 5-year-old girl, Hillhouse told McClatchy News.

“There were 12 people on the boat and the adults were able to swim to shore,” he said.

The two girls were wearing life vests at the time, but Hillhouse said they “were trapped under the boat when it sank and subsequently drowned.”

First responders went into the water to look for the girls, but the tide was strong and they were pinned against the dock, KDFW reported. After a few hours, they got the boat upright and found the girls’ bodies.

“It’s tragic when it’s an adult, and when we had the two children, that’s hard on everybody,” Hillhouse told WFAA.

The identities of the girls have not been released.
