Hikers see man trip and plunge 100 feet to his death off trail, AK troopers say
A group of hikers saw a man fall 100 feet to his death from a trail in Alaska, troopers said.
William Milks, 64, was on a group hike when he fell at about 3:30 p.m. June 21 from the Salmon Creek Trail in Juneau, Alaska State Troopers said in a news release.
Milks tripped, then “lost his footing, and fell off the side of the trail,” troopers said.
The hikers reported the incident to authorities, and they had to repel down the trail.
Troopers said they discovered Milks had died from the fall, and recovered his body.
A medical examiner will conduct an autopsy on his body.
Salmon Creek Trail is a 6.4-mile out-and-back trek with an estimated elevation gain of 1,420 feet, according to AllTrails.
The hike is considered moderate with “steep and rocky sections.”
