High school senior dies in crash hours after her prom ended, Illinois cops say
“A night of enchanted elegance” ended in tragedy when a student died in a crash hours after her senior prom, Illinois officials said.
At about 4:30 a.m. on May 4, the 18-year-old crashed on a ramp off of Interstate 94 in Calumet City, Illinois State Police said. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The cause of the crash was not shared by troopers.
Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School identified the student as Tom Mya Lyons in an email to parents the day of the deadly crash.
The night before, Lyons had attended her senior prom at the Field Museum in Chicago, photos shared to Facebook showed.
“Tom Mya was more than just a student—she was a vibrant member of our community, a loyal friend, a dedicated classmate, a committed teammate, and a positive presence throughout Homewood-Flossmoor High School,” Principal Clinton Alexander said in a statement to McClatchy News.
Lyons is remembered as a “central” member to the high school’s step team, school officials said.
“Her energy, kindness, and spirit touched the lives of many, and her absence will be deeply felt by us all,” the principal said.
Calumet City is about a 25-mile drive south from downtown Chicago.
