Nurse convicted of performing sex acts on teen he met on Reddit, CA officials say
A nurse accused of engaging in sex acts with a teenage girl he met on Reddit has been convicted, California prosecutors say.
Travis Harris, 40, a Scotts Valley travel nurse, was convicted of a slew of charges in relation to a series of incidents involving a 15-year-old girl, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said in an April 15 news release.
Reddit did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment on April 17.
After meeting the teenager on a Reddit chat board in September 2022, Harris is accused of chatting with her for a week and meeting her in person to perform sex acts, prosecutors said.
At the time, Harris, 38, was aware the girl was 15 years old, prosecutors said.
“They met in person many times, at various locations, over the next few months, engaging in various sex acts,” prosecutors said.
Harris is also accused of sending the girl “lingerie, sex toys and adult clothing,” prosecutors said.
In addition, Harris sent the girl nude photos of himself and recorded photos and videos of him and the girl engaged in sex acts, according to prosecutors.
He requested that the girl get other young friends to engage in sex acts with him, prosecutors said.
Harris “spoke to her about his sexual fantasies” and told her about a time he was naked beside a 9-year-old child who lived in his household, prosecutors said.
The 9-year-old girl, now an adult, came forward after seeing news of Harris’ July 2023 arrest, prosecutors said.
The woman told investigators Harris had molested her when she was a child, prosecutors said.
Harris was convicted of a number of charges, including eight counts of lewd act on a child, age 14 or 15, six counts of lewd act on a child under 14 and two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse, according to prosecutors.
Harris will appear in court June 4 and faces a maximum sentence of 51 years, 4 months to life, prosecutors said.
Scotts Valley is about a 70-mile drive south from San Francisco.
