An Indiana woman has been charged after officials say she went to her daughter’s school irate over a “same-sexuality” assignment.

The 48-year-old woman is charged with felony possession of a firearm on school property and harassment, according to court records.

McClatchy News is not naming the woman to protect the identity of her child.

On April 9, Decatur Township police were called to Valley Mills Elementary School for reports of an “irate parent,” according to a probable cause statement.

When police arrived, they were told the parent had “calmed down” and “everything was okay,” the court document said.

The woman came into the main office, and officers noticed a gun holstered on her waist, according to the court document. Police disarmed the woman, then spoke to her about why she was upset.

The woman told police her daughter, who is in sixth grade, was given an assignment that “had to do with same sexuality relationships,” according to court records. The woman also said the teacher and her significant other had displayed public affection with each other in front of the students.

When asked about the gun, the woman said she always wears it and forgot she had in on her that day. She said she had been to the school with it before, the court document said. A school secretary also told police the woman had been to the school with a gun in the past, but it was only noticed as she was leaving.

Police said the woman never brandished the gun at the school. After the woman was released from the school location, she began sending messages to the teacher, police said.

The woman told the teacher that her daughter got a “taste of bad teachers” and she uses her “position to mess with the minds of our children,” the court document said.

The woman also sent the teacher a friend request on Facebook and sent her a message calling her a “child predator” and told the teacher “you should never be kissing your wife in front of students, or push your beliefs on our children,” according to the court document.

When officers spoke to the teacher, she said she gave the students an assignment centered around flags and gave them examples of country flags, including a rainbow flag hung up in the classroom with the words “be kind” on it, police said.

When the woman contacted the teacher with disapproval of the assignment, the teacher said she excused the student from participating, the court document said.

The teacher said she has a family photo on her desk with her spouse in it and felt in fear for her life after receiving messages from the woman, police said.

The woman was given a $500 bond and is due back in court April 17.

Decatur Township Schools sent a statement to WTHR that said in part, “A warrant was filed for her arrest, and she is not permitted on any Decatur Township school property. We are committed to ensuring a safe learning environment for students and staff, and are grateful for the quick action of the office staff and school police in handling the situation safely.”
