A 62-year-old grandfather died after going into cardiac arrest while undergoing dental work, his Ohio family says.

Larry Lewis was sedated at an Allen County, Indiana, dentist office March 13 when he suffered a “cardiopulmonary arrest event,” the Allen County Coroner’s Office told WANE and WPTA.

His daughter-in-law, Christa Font Lewis, said he was not breathing for 15 minutes and was eventually put on a ventilator. An MRI revealed he had brain damage, but doctors were unable to perform additional tests because he remained asleep.

Lewis was transferred to hospice care March 25 and died the following day, family said.

The coroner’s office said in an April 11 report that Lewis’ cause of death has not been confirmed, WANE and WPTA reported. The dental office incident remains under investigation.

Lewis, of Haviland, Ohio, had four grandchildren and 10 step-grandchildren, according to his obituary.

“He enjoyed motorcycles, collecting cars, taking trips and making memories,” loved ones said in the obituary.

Allen County is about a 135-mile drive northeast from Indianapolis.
