Beachgoer peacefully sunning himself gets run over by Jeep, Florida cops say
A man sunning himself on a popular Florida beach went from bliss to agony in seconds when a Jeep drove over him, according to investigators.
It happened around 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, in Ormond Beach, and the victim was hospitalized with multiple injuries, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Ormond Beach is about an 85-mile drive southeast from Jacksonville.
“A 33-year-old Ocala man was sunbathing when the driver of a Jeep traveled outside of the travel lanes to back into a parking spot and ran him over,” the sheriff’s office said in the April 7 news release.
“The man suffered injuries to his thigh and arm. The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries where he was reported to be in stable condition.”
The victim was identified as Coleson Janey by WESH, which reports he suffered a broken femur and one forearm was “broken in two places.”
“I was just screaming, screaming my head off, screaming bloody murder, of course, because I was just in so much pain,” Janey told the station. “I’m just thankful to be alive.”
The Jeep driver, a 61-year-old Ormond Beach woman, waited at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, officials said. She was cited with careless driving, the sheriff’s office said.
“There were no signs of impairment,” the sheriff’s office said. “These are the initial details gathered during the early stages of the crash investigation, which is active and continuing.”
It marks the second time this year a beachgoer has been run over while on a Volusia County beach.
In February, a pickup truck backing out of a parking space in Daytona Beach drove over the head of a woman, the sheriff’s office said. The victim was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, officials said.
