Multiple 911 calls about a pack of dogs terrorizing people led to a German shepherd being killed during a confrontation with a deputy, according to investigators in Southwest Florida.

The shooting happened Sunday, April 6, on a residential street in East Naples, and the deputy escaped injury, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office said in a new release.

“CCSO’s Communications Center received eight separate 9-1-1 calls from residents ... reporting four German shepherds loose,” the sheriff’s office said. “Callers described the dogs as aggressive and said they were chasing people. One caller reported that the dogs were attempting to attack children.”

A deputy exited his patrol car on Pearl Harbor Drive and was speaking to one of the neighbors when a dog approached them, officials said.

“One of the dogs charged directly at the deputy in an aggressive manner,” the sheriff’s office said. “Faced with an imminent threat to his safety, the deputy was forced to discharge his weapon to stop the attack.”

The dog died at the scene.

Details of what became of the other three dogs were not released.

The shooting is under investigation to make sure “policies and procedures were followed,” officials said..

East Naples is about a 125-mile drive southeast from Tampa.
