An elementary school teacher dragged a 3-year-old student across the floor of a room, causing injuries, West Virginia police said.

Patricia Summerfield, a 55-year-old teacher at Holz Elementary in Charleston, was arrested and charged with “battery and assault of a disabled child,” the West Virginia State Police said in an April 3 news release.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court, the child, who is nonverbal, had scratches and red marks on her body as a result of the incident, WCHS reported.

Two other school workers saw Summerfield dragging the child on the floor, according to police.

McClatchy News reached out to Kanawha County School District officials for comment April 3 but did not receive an immediate response. A district spokesperson told WSAZ administrators learned about the incident April 1.

“School administrators took all appropriate action per KCS policies,” the spokesperson said, according to WSAZ.

Summerfield posted a $75,000 bond and has a preliminary hearing set for April 10, WCHS reported.
