Family dog kills infant just after her 6-month birthday celebration, Texas cops say
A 6-month-old girl who was attacked by one of her family’s dogs died the next day, according to Texas news outlets.
The attack happened inside the family’s apartment just after 4 p.m. on April 1, Baytown Police told KPRC. Neighbors told the outlet the family had just held a party at the apartment complex to mark the baby’s half-birthday.
The girl was taken to a hospital in an ambulance. Her death was reported on April 2, according to KTRK.
Video from KHOU shows police vehicles lining up around the block, police blocking off the complex and Baytown Animal Services removing two dogs from the apartment.
Baytown spokesperson Jason Calder told the outlet that both dogs are male pit bull mixes, and the one that did not attack the girl was in a kennelat the time.
“The dogs were newer to the apartment,” Calder said, according to KHOU.
Neighbors in the apartment complex witnessed the aftermath of the dog attack.
“It wasn’t pretty,” neighbor Ken Sheltoe told KHOU. “There was blood all over the baby’s head.”
Officials told KTRK that no charges have been filed against any family members, and no arrests have been made, but there is an ongoing investigation.
The name of the infant who died has not been publicly released.
Baytown is about a 25-mile drive east of Houston.
