A man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend in her bed after a fight is headed to prison, prosecutors in Colorado said.

Roy L. Jones, 54, was sentenced to 192 years behind bars after being convicted of second-degree murder with habitual criminal sentence enhancers, the district attorney for the 18th Judicial District said in a March 31 news release.

Jones was represented by attorneys from the state public defender office, which has a policy not to comment on cases.

Jones shot and killed Angela T. Cordova in their home in Sheridan in May 2024, prosecutors said.

Cordova’s son, who was 21 at the time, woke up to the couple arguing, according to prosecutors.

The son then heard “a loud ‘bang,’” followed by Jones’ truck starting up, prosecutors said.

The son called 911, and police found 52-year-old Cordova “unresponsive in her bed with an apparent gunshot wound to her head,” per the release.

Security video “showed Jones leaving the house shortly after he murdered Ms. Cordova,” according to prosecutors.

Jones was arrested the same day, the Sheridan Police Department said in a Facebook post at the time.

He and Cordova “had only been dating for about a year before Mr. Jones decided to murder Ms. Cordova in her own bed,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Jacob Kremin said, per the release. He added that Jones “robbed a son and daughter of their mother and deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars.”

Assistant District Attorney Ryan Brackley said he hopes the sentence brings some closure to Cordova’s family, per the release.

Cordova, a devoted mom, was “loved and adored by both family and friends” and “she will always be remembered for her kind and huge heart and her infectious laugh,” according to an online obituary.

Sheridan is about a 10-mile drive south from Denver.
