A mother’s stroll to the grocery store for some exercise ended in a life–changing lottery win in Maryland, officials said.

She has been playing the lottery since she moved there a few years ago, officials said in a March 20 news release.

She selects tickets based on their corresponding number on the display case, “particularly drawn to 4, 7, and 13, which she considers her lucky numbers,” officials said.

The strategy finally paid off with a $50,000 win. The Rockville woman had walked to her local food store to get some exercise that day and picked up a Monopoly X20 scratch–off that she scratched right there in the store.

“I scanned it and knew I won something, but I wasn’t sure how much,” she told officials. “When I scanned it again and saw $50,000, my heart was racing — I really couldn’t believe my eyes!”

She rushed home to share the news with her kids.

“Her daughter, initially skeptical and suspecting a prank, rushed over to confirm the win,” officials said. “A quick scan using the Maryland Lottery app confirmed the prize. No trick, just a dream come true.”

The mom shared her “practical” plans for the prize: “I never thought I’d have this much money at my disposal, so the smartest thing is to save it,” she said.

Rockville is about a 20-mile drive northwest of Washington D.C.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
