Which groups does Trump care most — and least — about? What Americans say in new poll
Which groups of Americans does President Donald Trump care the most — and least — about?
In a new YouGov poll, respondents were most likely to say Trump is concerned about the needs and problems of the wealthy, while they were least likely to say he is preoccupied with the needs and problems of LGBT people.
The March 17 poll — which asked about 30 groups — found results varied significantly among Republicans and Democrats, and it revealed several sizable shifts from previous polls.
The results were taken from two separate surveys conducted between Feb. 7 and 14. They sampled a combined 2,204 U.S. adults and had an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
Results of the poll
Sixty-three percent of respondents said the president cares a lot about the needs and problems of the wealthy, making it the No. 1 cohort that Americans think he prioritizes.
The other groups that ranked near the top were those that are typically viewed as making up Trump’s base of supporters.
Fifty-one percent said the president cares a lot about the problems and needs of white Americans, while 49% said the same about Republicans and 41% said the same about men. Following these, 34% said Trump has a lot of concern for the issues and necessities of Christians.
Among the groups that made up the middle of the pack were veterans — with 30% saying Trump cared a lot about them — and middle-class Americans, with 28% saying the same.
Meanwhile, LGBT Americans came in at the bottom, with just 10% of respondents saying the president cared a lot about their needs and problems. In contrast, 51% said he did not care at all about their issues, making it the group with the highest percentage to say this.
Coming in slightly above them were Democrats — with 13% saying Trump cared a lot — and immigrants to the U.S., with 16% saying he cared a lot.
Partisan breakdown
Republicans were far more likely than Democrats to say the president cares a lot about nearly every group.
Most GOP respondents said Trump cares a lot about 23 out of 30 groups. They were most likely to say he has a lot of concern for Republicans (74%), followed by white Americans (70%) and veterans (69%).
In contrast, a majority of Democrats only said Trump cared a lot about one group: the wealthy, with 78% saying this. White Americans and Republicans came in a distant second and third, with 44% and 39%, respectively, saying Trump cared a lot about their needs and problems. For nearly every other group, only single-digit shares of Democrats said he had a lot of concern.
Change from past polls
There were a couple noteworthy changes from similar polls conducted in October and August.
One group that shifted several points in the ranking was young people. In August, 22% said Trump cared a lot about their needs and problems, while that figure rose to 28% in October and to 30% in the latest poll.
In contrast, the trend goes in the opposite direction for Americans living in rural areas. In October, 24% said Trump doesn’t care at all about the needs and problems of this cohort, while 31% said the same in the latest poll.
