A skier died after colliding with a padded light pole at a Colorado resort, deputies said.

The man was skiing down a trail “at a high speed” on March 11 when he veered and hit the pole after losing control, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook.

The man was wearing a helmet, and no one else was involved in the incident at Keystone Resort, according to deputies.

Ski patrol members at the resort “responded immediately and provided advanced life-saving measures before” taking the skier to a hospital, “where he was pronounced dead,” deputies said.

He wasn’t identified by deputies, but the resort confirmed he was 61 years old.

The man was on Dercum Mountain on an intermediate trail, resort officials said in a statement provided to McClatchy News on March 12.

“Keystone Resort, Keystone Ski Patrol and the entire Vail Resorts family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guest’s family and friends,” resort Vice President and General Manager Shannon Buhler said in the statement.

There was no evidence of intoxication or foul play, per the sheriff’s office, and Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said “our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by this tragic loss.”

Keystone Resort is about a 75-mile drive southwest from Denver.
