Family counselor installs hidden cameras in office bathroom, Pennsylvania officials say
A family counselor hid spy cameras in his office and secretly recorded patients and staff using the bathroom, Pennsylvania officials said.
Jonathan Elliot Moyer, 54, of Alburtis is charged with six counts of invasion of privacy, among other charges, according to a March 7 news release from the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office.
On March 3, an individual reported finding a micro-SD card in the Quakertown office of Empower Life Coaching & Counseling that contained videos of Moyer setting up a secret camera and women using the bathroom, according to officials.
Moyer was a program director with the counseling center where he specialized in parent-child interactions, family sessions, anxiety, and drugs and alcohol, the attorney’s office said.
While executing a search warrant at the Quakertown office, Moyer tried to use the bathroom “but was denied,” officials said.
Detectives found a hidden camera disguised as a charging block across from the toilet and “a key fob that was later discovered to be a covert digital video recorder,” according to the district attorney’s office.
Authorities executed a search warrant at Moyer’s home, where they found more covert charging block cameras, covert pens, another covert key fob and numerous storage devices, officials said.
In a statement posted to their website, Empower Life Coaching & Counseling announced that the Quakertown office is permanently closed.
“We are all in shock about his actions and want to make everyone aware that this was an act of only one individual,” the practice said about Moyer in the statement. “We understand this news is disturbing for everyone, and we are working on reaching out to current clients one-on-one.”
Moyer is also charged with possession of an instrument of crime, possession of a device for interception of oral communications and interception of oral communications, officials said.
McClatchy News reached out to Moyer’s attorney March 11 for comment but did not immediately hear back.
Investigators believe more victims may be identified as they continue to review the devices.
