61-year-old Uber driver gropes woman after she ends call with sister, PA official says
An Uber driver is accused of groping a passenger after asking her to sit in the front seat, Pennsylvania officials said.
Robert Corcoran, 61, of West Chester, was arrested on indecent assault and harassment charges in connection with the Feb. 10 incident, according to a March 7 news release from the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
Attorney information for Corcoran was not available.
Prosecutors said that while driving for Uber, Corcoran picked up a man and a woman shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 10.
He dropped the man off first, then asked the woman to move to the front seat where she FaceTimed with her sister, prosecutors said.
After she ended the call, the driver “groped the woman’s breast,” and continued to make “lewd comments” despite the passenger telling him to stop, the district attorney’s office said.
When they arrived at the woman’s house, Corcoran got out of the car and followed her, hugged her, and tried to kiss her, prosecutors said.
The woman reported the sexual assault to Whitpain Township Police the same day, prosecutors said.
“The actions reported here are extremely disturbing,” an Uber spokesperson told McClatchy News in a statement March 7. “Sexual misconduct of any kind is never tolerated, and we banned the driver from the Uber platform as soon as it was reported to us.”
“All passengers, especially female passengers, using a car service like Uber or Lyft have to take safety precautions,” Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele said per the release. “This woman was Facetiming with someone while in the Uber, texting her contact, verbally resisting the driver and noting the vehicle’s license plate, all of which were heads-up actions.”
“A few other safety recommendations are for female passengers to sit in the back seat and to use the alert button on the app or to call 911 if they feel unsafe,” Steele said.
