Light rail rider dies after he gets caught on train and dragged, Oregon cops say
A man died after getting dragged by a light rail in Oregon, deputies said.
The incident happened at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the Delta Park Transit Station in Portland, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
Deputies said two TriMet MAX trains going in different directions were stopped at the station.
The man attempted to reach his train by crossing over the tracks and passing over a departing train, deputies said.
That’s when he got stuck on the train’s couplers, which connect two carts together, and was dragged as the light rail left the station, deputies said.
He hit his head on the tracks, causing authorities to believe he died from blunt force trauma, deputies said.
A medical examiner will determine his official cause of death.
Officers with the Transit Police Division investigated the incident and said it appeared to be an accidental death.
Portland Fire and Rescue told KGW the man was in his 30s.
“We urge all pedestrians and commuters to use designated crosswalks, remain off the tracks unless at a proper crossing, and stay alert to their surroundings,” authorities said.
