A man called 911 to report that he had killed his wife, then abruptly hung up and fled as officers rushed to investigate, Texas police said.

The call came in the afternoon of Feb. 7, the San Marcos Police Department said in a Feb. 10 news release. On the call, he said he “killed his wife” and that he “shot her,” before abruptly hanging up, police said.

The caller didn’t pick up calls returned by the dispatcher, according to the news release.

Officers went to the home and found the back door ajar. They went inside and found 43-year-old Victoria Valadez shot dead in the back bedroom, police said.

Her husband, 47-year-old Juan Manuel Yanez, was not at the home and his vehicle was gone, according to police.

The phone number that originally made the 911 call was registered to Yanez, which identified him as a suspect, police said.

Hours later, he was arrested in Harris County and charged with murder. He is currently held on a $100,000 bond, police said.

San Marcos is a 165-mile drive west from Houston.
