Man plans to meet preteen for sex acts in Alaska after his mom thwarts first try, feds say
A 32-year-old man continued messaging with a law enforcement official posing as a preteen girl even after his mom found out about the communications, federal prosecutors in Alaska said.
Dahkota Mitchell, of Fairbanks, made a plan to meet the “girl” and an underage friend, providing a hotel address and room number, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska said in a news release. Mitchell was arrested at an Anchorage hotel in November 2023, and he pleaded guilty the following October to attempted coercion and enticement of a minor, according to prosecutors.
He was sentenced Jan. 31 to 12 years behind bars and 25 years of supervised release, prosecutors said.
McClatchy News reached out to his attorney Feb. 5 and was awaiting a response.
In a court filing, Mitchell’s attorney said Mitchell had a “difficult past” and functions intellectually at a 12-year-old’s level, the filing said.
He didn’t mean to hurt anyone and hopes to undergo treatment while behind bars, the filing said.
Mitchell is accused of responding to an online ad posted by a law enforcement official posing as a 12-year-old girl. The ad was in “an Alaskan chat group” on a social media platform known to be used by adults looking for “sexual encounters with minors,” prosecutors said.
“A short time after the posting, (Mitchell) messaged the undercover official. Between July 7 and Nov. 28, 2023, Mitchell and the undercover official discussed multiple things, including Mitchell’s requests that the undercover official send him explicit content, plans to meet in-person, and sexual interactions if an in-person meeting occurred,” according to prosecutors.
Mitchell made plans to meet the “girl” in Anchorage and “requested she bring an 11-year-old friend,” prosecutors said. But then he “abruptly stopped communicating,” according to prosecutors.
About a week later, “Mitchell resumed communicating with the undercover official and explained that his mother had found out about their communications,” prosecutors said.
Still, he “made another plan to meet with the undercover official and the alleged minor friend” at an Anchorage hotel, prosecutors said. However, federal agents showed up to the hotel instead and he was arrested.
