A man has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a good Samaritan trying to stop an alleged assault on a woman, Texas authorities say.

Marcus Jack, 48, has also been charged with assaulting a family member and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon following the Monday, Feb. 3, incident, according to court records filed in Harris County.

Officers with the Houston Police Department found the male victim with multiple gunshot wounds, according to a news release. The alleged attack began near a bus stop that afternoon, KPRC reported.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not been publicly disclosed.

An investigation revealed Jack was assaulting a woman he was dating when a good Samaritan approached Jack and slapped him, police said. As the man walked away, Jack is accused of shooting him multiple times.

He then pistol whipped the female victim, whose condition is unknown, according to court records.

Jack fled on foot before being captured a couple blocks away, police said.

Jack was previously convicted of beating his ex-wife, KTRK reported. The victim in Monday’s attack was granted a protective order, according to the news outlet.

Records show Jack remains in the Harris County Jail as of Feb. 5 on a $375,000 bond.
