Dad slaps son with cognitive disability in face when he loses glasses, Indiana cops say
An Indiana man was arrested after police say he assaulted his son with an intellectual disability because he was angry over a pair of lost glasses.
Claude T. Davis Sr. is charged with battery; injury to a person with mental/physical handicap, according to a police report from the Muncie Police Department. Attorney information for Davis was not available.
The morning of Jan. 31, police were called to a career center in Muncie after a 20-year-old student with cognitive disabilities reported to staff that his father had assaulted him that morning.
When police spoke to the man, he told them his father slapped him in the face four times because he was upset his son couldn’t find his glasses. He said his father then punched a hole in their kitchen wall, according to the report.
The man told police his father slapped in on his cheeks twice on each side, the report said. He said Davis then drove him to school and while in the car, he grabbed him by the back of his neck and pulled him toward him, according to police.
Officers went to Davis’ home to speak with him about the incident.
Davis told the officer that his son lost his glasses so he took his phone and keys. Davis also said he got very angry and has a “temper problem,” police said.
He said the two got into an argument and when police asked if he punched a hole in a wall, Davis responded by saying, “I don’t hit my kids,” according to police.
The officer asked Davis if he assaulted his son and he said no.
Davis was then arrested, the report said. On the way to the Delaware County Jail, police said Davis “made several unprompted excited utterances.” At one point he said, “I’ve told him many times that what happens in my house, stays in my house,” according to police.
