A man was attacked at his home in Georgia after opening his front door to two men disguised as Amazon delivery workers, officials said.

The Savannah Police Department responded to the attack at about 8:30 a.m. Jan. 11, a spokesperson for the city told McClatchy News.

Doorbell video, shared with WTOC, shows two men wearing blue jackets with an Amazon logo walking up to the residence with a package and later running away while a man inside yells for help.

Police said the fake Amazon workers demanded money, then beat the man — identified as 66-year-old George ‘Dirk’ Hardison — for nearly eight minutes, WTOC reported.

He was treated by emergency medical services at his home, then taken to a hospital for head injuries, the city spokesperson said.

Some people commented supportive messages on Hardison’s Facebook page.

“So sorry Dirk, you are so lucky to have made it (through) that horrible experience,” one person said. “You are too good a guy to have anything like that happen to you.”

Hardison is a bartender, according to a GoFundMe.

An Amazon spokesperson told McClatchy News the men were not making a scheduled Amazon delivery. Amazon does not usually knock on doors or ask for a customer’s signature unless it was previously arranged.

The incident is under investigation, and as of Jan. 14, no arrests have been made, the city spokesperson said.

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson addressed the attack in a Jan. 14 news conference shared on Facebook.

“We will find out who done this,” he said, adding a warning to “be careful” and “never open a door for folks that you don’t know.”
