7-year-old sitting in car hurt during gun battle at custody dispute, California cops say
A 7-year-old sitting in a car was injured during a gun battle that stemmed from a custody dispute, California police say.
Multiple calls about “numerous gunshots” came into Pleasant Hill police just before noon Monday, December 23, the police department said in a Facebook post.
When officers arrived in the area, they found three cars “were involved in the incident,” police said.
One of the drivers, a 27-year-old man, had a gunshot wound to his hand, police said.
A 7-year-old, who was in one of the cars at the time of shooting, had minor injuries, according to police.
Both the man and child were treated at a hospital, then released, police said.
Through investigation, officers determined the shooting started “as a custody dispute between the parents of the injured child.”
Occupants in two of the cars “exchanged gunfire with one another at close range,” according to police.
A 38-year-old Brentwood woman was arrested on multiple charges, including child endangerment and shooting at an occupied vehicle, police said
The injured driver was arrested on the same charges, as well as one charge of convicted felon in possession of a firearm, according to police.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, police said.
Pleasant Hill is about a 30-mile drive northeast from San Francisco.
