Noises lead bystander to taped box filled with six puppies, Oregon officials say
A man is accused of abandoning six puppies in a taped-up box that had no food, water or ventilation, Oregon authorities said.
A bystander heard noises from a taped box near a bus stop in Springfield on Dec. 5, according to a news release by the police department.
The bystander looked inside the box and found six puppies that were “several weeks old” inside, police said.
Springfield Animal Control was called and took the puppies to the Greenhill Humane Society, the release said.
Police found a shipping label on the box addressed to 72-year-old Jeffery Lynn Dugger, officials said.
They learned Dugger had called the Greenhill Humane Society 24 hours earlier and said he would “dispose” of the puppies if the shelter didn’t pick them up “immediately,” police said.
Dugger was charged with six counts of animal abandonment/cruelty, officials said.
Springfield is about a 100-mile drive south of Portland.
