Man shot in the face after refusing to share his potato chips, Ohio officials say
An Ohio man will serve jail time after prosecutors say he shot a man outside a nightclub in a dispute over potato chips.
Melvin Wright, Jr., 43, of Akron was sentenced Nov. 25 to nine to 12 years in prison, according to a news release from Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich.
Wright previously pleaded guilty to charges that included attempted murder with a firearm, having weapons while under a disability, and illegal possession of a firearm in a liquor permit premises, Kolkovich said.
McClatchy News reached out to Wright’s attorney for comment Nov. 26 but did not immediately hear back.
According to officials, Wright approached a man inside a nightclub on Nov. 28, 2023, and asked for some of his potato chips.
When the man refused, Wright followed him out of the club to his car and shot him in the face, Kolkovich said.
The man drove himself to the hospital and was admitted for six days, according to the release.
“Senseless violence has no place in Akron, and I am grateful that the survivor of this crime is continuing his courageous recovery,” Kolkovich said in the release.
Wright was designated as a violent offender and must register annually as a violent offender for 10 years following his release from prison, officials said.
