Most Democrats do not feel inspired to resist President-elect Donald Trump during his second term, according to new polling.

In the latest CBS News poll — which comes on the heels of Trump winning the 2024 presidential election — 44% of Democrats said Trump’s election makes them “motivated to oppose him.”

In contrast, 10% said it makes them “motivated to support him.” And a plurality of Democrats, 46%, said Trump’s victory does not motivate them either way.

“There seems to be a sense of exhaustion” among Democrats, according to a CBS News write-up of the findings.

On the other hand, the vast majority of Republicans, 78%, said Trump’s victory makes them motivated to support him. Just 4% said it makes them energized to oppose him, and 18% said it doesn’t motivate them either way.

The poll — conducted between Nov. 19-22 — sampled 2,232 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 2.3 percentage points.

Other findings

The poll also found that 31% of respondents are happy with Trump’s victory, while 24% are satisfied. Twenty-three percent said they were dissatisfied, and 21% said they were angry.

When asked about Trump’s second term, there was a strong divide in responses among Democrats and Republicans.

A majority of Republicans, 54%, said they were excited about what Trump will do in office, while just 4% of Democrats said the same. In contrast, half of Democrats said they were scared, while just 1% of Republicans said the same.

Additionally, a majority of respondents, 59%, said they approved of the way Trump has thus far handled the transition. Meanwhile, 41% said they disapproved.

The poll also asked respondents for their opinions on specific policies that Trump could pursue in office.

A slim majority, 52%, said they favor imposing tariffs on goods imported into the country, while 48% said they opposed tariffs.

Similarly, 57% of respondents said they approved of deporting all illegal immigrants in the United States. Forty-three percent said they disapproved of this policy.

Further, a slim majority, 51%, said they believe the U.S. should not send military aid and weapons to Ukraine. Meanwhile, 49% said the U.S. should send weapons and aid.
