23-year-old ICU nurse and ‘avid hunter’ dies in ‘hunting incident,’ Texas officials say
A 23-year-old ICU nurse was killed in a “hunting incident” in South Texas, officials say and news outlets report.
Game wardens responded to the incident in Kenedy County “late” in the day on Friday, Nov. 15, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department said in a news release. The woman, Hailey Jasso, of Pharr, was pronounced dead after being taken to a nearby hospital.
“This is an open case,” TPWD said, adding that game wardens and Texas Rangers are working together in the investigation.
Jasso was an ICU nurse at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, and also an “avid hunter and fisherman,” her obituary read.
Jasso was shot while hunting with her father near Padre Island National Seashore, investigators told KRIV. They were heading back to camp together when her father’s gun “went off” and fatally hit her, according to the outlet.
It’s the first reported hunting-related death of the season in Texas.
“A woman of boundless energy and unwavering faith, Hailey lived a life filled with adventure, joy, and love for the outdoors,” Jasso’s obituary read.
“Above all, Hailey lived her life guided by her strong Christian faith, sharing love, kindness, and grace with all she met. Her infectious laughter, generous spirit, and passion for life will be deeply missed by all who knew her.”
Kenedy County is a roughly 300-mile drive southwest from Houston.
