A mother is accused of dropping off her 12-year-old son on the shoulder of an interstate and driving off without him, according to Wisconsin authorities and news reports.

The boy was found by himself after being abandoned along Interstate 94 on Thursday, Nov. 7, and deputies said he was crying when he was picked up, WISN reported, citing a criminal complaint.

When authorities made contact with the boy’s mother, 43-year-old Flor Escalante, she said she had gotten into an argument with her son over his school grades, according to WITI.

She told deputies she kicked her son out of the vehicle because he “does not appreciate the things she does for him,” Seehafernews.com reported.

“Escalante said she works multiple jobs and told the boy to finish walking the nearly two miles to (his school) so he would understand ‘what labor is,’” WITI reported, citing the complaint.

It was 50 degrees when the boy was dropped off without wearing a jacket, according to Seehafer News and WISN.

Court records show Escalante was charged with abandonment of a child and neglecting a child.

Escalanate was not listed in the Waukesha County Jail as of Nov. 14. She is due in court Nov. 21, according to court records.
