A senior pup has been given a second chance at life after being surrendered by his loved ones in Pennsylvania.

Shock was in horrible condition when the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Philadelphia took over the reins and stepped in to help save his life, they said in a Facebook post.

“At 15 years old, Shock was surrendered to ACCT Philly by the people he had once trusted—his owners,” the shelter said in a Nov. 8 post. “His body was covered in thick, painful mats, his nails so overgrown that they seemed like an afterthought. A severe infection or injury created a head tilt and caused him to stumble and fall repeatedly, and his vision was clouded by cataracts.”

Unfortunately, it wasn’t just his body that was broken — so was his soul.

“But it wasn’t just his physical condition that was heartbreaking. Shock seemingly had no idea what had happened, no understanding of why he was abandoned, or why everything he once knew was slipping away. His entire world had been turned upside down, and he was completely alone,” the shelter said.

It seemed almost hopeless when ACCT Philly contacted the SPCA to look into Shock’s ailments and decided to have him transferred to the SPCA’s facility.

“After his painful matted fur was shaved away, Shock would lose nearly two pounds—each strand of fur a testament to the neglect he had endured. We placed him on an IV for hydration and monitored him closely,” the shelter said.

“But with his condition, his head tilt, and his inability to stand on his own, our team feared the worst. We prepared ourselves for the gut-wrenching possibility that we might have to make the hardest decision of all—to say goodbye to a dog who had already endured so much.”

However, Shock’s will to live was much stronger than expected and he began to show it.

“Shock surprised us all. Slowly, he began to improve. His tail started to wag again, and he found the strength to take a few tentative steps. He’s still a bit head-shy, but the spark of life in his eyes is undeniable. Though his past may have been filled with abandonment and pain, Shock is ready for the chance to feel safe, loved, and cherished in his final years.”

The shelter posted videos and photos of Shock improving on social media — and now, he needs a loving home where he can live out his golden years.
