Lit cigarette ignites propane tank blast, burning man and 5 young brothers, MN cops say
Five boys and a man are recovering after they were burned when a propane tank exploded in Minnesota, according to deputies.
At 12:30 p.m. Nov. 4, authorities were called for reports of an explosion and fire at a storage unit, according to a Facebook post by the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said a propane tank was leaking inside of a metal storage unit. When the doors opened, a man lit a cigarette and the tank exploded, according to the sheriff’s office.
The man and five children, between the ages of 6 and 14, were all burned, deputies said.
People who were passing helped the man and boys until first responders got there, the sheriff’s office said.
Kyra Frank told the Minnesota Star Tribune the boys are all brothers, and the man is their father.
“All five boys have made it to the burn treatment center. There are still a lot of unknowns at this time but they are in stable condition. They have a long road ahead of them,” Frank said on a GoFundMe page.
All of the boys will need surgery, and their burns range from 5% to 55%, according to the GoFundMe.
