A classroom aide was arrested after Pennsylvania police say she hit an elementary school student in the face with a door.

Police received a report Oct. 28 that a paraprofessional at Sto-Rox Upper Elementary School in McKees Rocks hit a 10-year-old student “with special needs,” according to an Oct. 30 news release from the Allegheny County Police Department.

During an investigation, detectives learned 31-year-old London Simmons, a paraprofessional contracted at the school “from an outside agency,” was videotaped opening a door into the student’s face “with such force” that it broke her glasses on impact, police said.

According to police, witnesses to the Oct. 24 incident said the student was knocked to the ground by the impact, but Simmons walked away without helping her.

Authorities said “the student was evaluated for a minor eye injury as a result of the fall.”

“The district will not stand for any mistreatment of our students,” a statement on the Sto-Rox School District website read.

“When this incident took place, the building principal immediately investigated and made a ChildLine report. The paraprofessional, who works for the contractor Soliant, was then removed from the building,” the district said in the statement.

McClatchy News reached out to Soliant Oct. 31 for comment but did not immediately hear back.

Simmons was arrested Oct. 30 on assault and child endangerment charges, court records show. Attorney information for Simmons was not available.

She is due in court Dec. 17 for a preliminary hearing, court records show.

McKees Rocks is about a five-mile drive northwest from Pittsburgh.
