A 14-year-old came up with a clever plan when a 37-year-old stranger stopped her and asked for her number, Arizona police said.

She put her mom’s number in his phone, which helped lead to his arrest, the Glendale Police Department said in an Oct. 23 Facebook post.

The freshman in high school was walking home from school Oct. 16 when Isaiah Navarro pulled up in a red vehicle and started talking to her, police said in a probable cause statement.

He handed her his phone and told her to put her number in it, police said.

She told authorities she was intimidated by him, so she grabbed his phone and put her mom’s number in it instead.

Navarro texted her mother thinking he was talking to the teen, police said.

Her mother continued to text the man pretending to be her daughter until “detectives got involved and continued the conversation,” police said.

Detectives posed as the teen as Navarro texted messages asking to perform sex acts on her, police said. When he asked to meet up the next day, detectives set up a time to meet him at a gym, police said.

“Navarro arrived at the location but instead of the 14-year-old young lady, Navarro met up with some handcuffs and was placed under arrest,” police said in the Facebook post.

He was arrested on suspicion of luring a minor for sexual exploitation.

Glendale is within the Phoenix metro area.
