Man assaults and nearly kidnaps girlfriend who wanted to break up, California cops say
A man accused of assaulting and trying to kidnap his girlfriend who wanted to break up was arrested, California deputies say.
After getting a 911 call about a man punching and kicking a woman shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, deputies arrived in Fontana to find a man with a woman in the street, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in an Oct. 21 news release.
When the 65-year-old woman tried to end her relationship with the man, later identified as 52-year-old Isidro Contreras, he threatened to kill himself and her, deputies said.
He then injured her by choking “her with an object” and “dragged her by her hair,” the sheriff’s department said.
Contreras threatened her once more when he saw deputies, the sheriff’s department said.
Deputies said they believe Contreras was in the middle of kidnapping his girlfriend “to harm her” when they arrived.
The woman appeared to be in distress, and Contreras was holding her in a way that “suggested she was being forced to move against her will,” according to deputies.
After a struggle, deputies detained Contreras, the sheriff’s department said.
Contreras, who is being held on $80,000 bail, was booked into jail on counts of kidnapping and inflicting corporal injury on spouse/cohabitant, according to deputies.
Fontana is about a 50-mile drive east from Los Angeles.
