Man accused of shooting, killing Texas brother arrested 2 years later, Iowa cops say
A man who spent more than two years on the run following the shooting death of his brother has now been arrested on a murder charge, authorities say.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office in Iowa said a Pomeroy resident kicked Kyle Coolack out of their home Oct. 20 when Coolack told housemates he had killed his brother.
Coolack, 39, was discovered walking along a highway by a Calhoun County deputy, according to the sheriff’s office. He initially gave the deputy a fake name until giving his true identity.
The deputy found out Coolack had an active murder warrant from Houston, the sheriff’s office said. He was jailed in Iowa and is awaiting extradition to Texas.
Coolack had been on the run since March 11, 2022, when he was accused of shooting and killing his brother, Brad Coolack, the Houston Police Department said.
Before his death, Brad Coolack, 35, had “frequently” been letting his brother stay with him, according to details of a criminal complaint. But the two weren’t without their quarrels, including in 2021 when loved ones said Kyle Coolack pistol-whipped his younger brother, police said.
On the night of Brad Coolack’s death, a neighbor heard two men arguing moments before hearing gunshots. “You slept with my wife,” the neighbor heard a man yell, according to police.
Brad Coolack’s ex-wife later told investigators, according to the court documents, that she had an affair with her husband’s brother as he was deployed overseas.
Police discovered the younger sibling shot and killed in the home, authorities said. Kyle Coolack, police later determined, is who called 911 after applying a tourniquet to his brother.
“Stay with me bro,” he said while on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, police said. He later told the dispatcher there was “no use” administering CPR because he knew the victim was dead.
Kyle Coolack was issued the murder charge in July 2022, according to the court documents. It’s unclear how long he had been in Iowa.
Pomeroy is more than 1,000 miles north from Houston.
