‘Today you’re going to die’. Man ‘disrespected’ at family event kills cousin, MN cops say
A man shot and killed his cousin during a family gathering in Minnesota because he felt “disrespected,” authorities say.
Police in Brooklyn Park said the shooting took place at a home Saturday, Sept. 21, during a “celebration of the birth of some children in the family.” About 30 people were at the home, scattered between the garage, backyard and inside.
With children present and family members playing cornhole in the backyard, Lue Chang is accused of shooting another man, identified by KSTP as Nichanon Kittikroekphon, 34.
One witness said he was playing cornhole when he heard three shots, then saw Chang, 32, fire a fourth shot at the victim’s back, police said.
Kittikroekphon, who according to social media posts is the cousin of Chang, was found by officers unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and back, according to a criminal complaint. He died at a hospital.
Chang, meanwhile, was being held down by another man upon officers’ arrival, court documents show. Police said they found “a large number of live rounds” on the ground.
Asked why he shot Kittikroekphon, Chang told a witness, “because he disrespected me,” according to the affidavit.
“Today you’re going to die,” one witness heard Chang say before firing the shots, police said.
Officers said a toddler was standing within a foot of Kittikroekphon, but the child and other witnesses were unharmed.
Kittikroekphon, who went by the stage name Tswb Moua, was considered a “rising star in Thailand’s music scene,” according to Hmong Talk. He moved to the United States “to join his older brother in search of a better life.”
He was expecting his first child with his wife, who recently moved to the U.S., Hmong Talk said on Facebook.
“The sweetest and most caring person on earth,” a loved one said of the victim.
Brooklyn Park is about a 15-mile drive northwest from Minneapolis.
