Couple meets on dating app — and their dogs hit it off, too. See ‘double love story’
A simple question on a dating app led TikTokers to believe a new love story should be a commercial.
On June 7, 24-year-old Ali Renteria, the owner of an English chocolate labrador, liked Ryan McCarthy’s Hinge photo featuring his English cream golden retriever, according to a Sept. 22 TikTok out of Arizona.
“Everyone on the video is commenting how it took me two weeks to get back to her, but I was on vacation and wanted to give it the time it deserved,” McCarthy, 27, told McClatchy News in a phone interview.
Then came the question that started the “double love story.”
“Why do I feel like our dogs would be best friends?” McCarthy can be seen asking Renteria in the video viewed more than 9.3 million times as of Sept. 25.
Eventually, the two went on their first date — a 5-mile walk in Scottsdale per Renteria’s request.
Then came their second date, another walk at the same place, but with their dogs.
“He brought coffee and immediately they loved each other,” Renteria told McClatchy News in an interview.
Within seconds of meeting, the pups created a spectacle with Renteria’s 3-year-old dog Lincoln spilling coffee all over her and McCarthy’s freshly groomed dog, Cruz, 2, rolling in the mud, she said.
The doggy pair spends “every day together, pretty much every minute together” as McCarthy works from home, he said.
“Every brunette deserves to find their blonde,” Renteria wrote in a Sept. 24 TikTok captioned, “The app that’s meant to be deleted, definitely got deleted.”
The video shows Lincoln and Cruz hanging out, one wearing sunglasses and the other wearing a backward hat.
Renteria and McCarthy are in agreement that although “TikTok can be a vicious place,” they’re happy “people are so supportive of loving someone,” they said.
“It’s just nice to see people being nice,” she said.
Now, TikTok users are begging the new couple to never “ever break up… for the dogs.”
“I’m afraid you must get married as soon as possible,” one commented.
“Welp, you have to marry that man now, you cannot break up that friendship,” another said.
“I fear you can never break up,” someone wrote.
TikTok commenters can sleep soundly because the two “said I love you two months into dating and have spent every moment together,” according Renteria’s Sept. 12 TikTok captioned “head over heels lemme tell ya.”
“Still can’t believe he’s a stranger I met on the internet,” Renteria wrote in the video. “He’s my absolute best friend.”
