Toddler hit by bullet through wall when man opens fire at girlfriend, Texas cops say
A toddler was struck in the knee with a stray bullet that came through the wall when a man opened fire on his girlfriend during an argument, Texas authorities said.
Eduardo Gomez, 42, of Houston was arrested Sept. 7 on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault of a family member in connection with the shooting, according to a news release from the Houston Police Department.
McClatchy News reached out to Gomez’s attorney Sept. 10 for comment but did not immediately hear back.
Officers responded Sept. 7 and found Gomez’s 38-year-old girlfriend shot in the chest and lower torso, and a 3-year-old with a gunshot wound to the right leg near the knee, according to court records.
Gomez told investigators that his girlfriend tried to stab him with a knife during the fight, so he opened fire, police said.
Authorities said “one of the bullets exited the bedroom through the wall” and hit a child “sitting in the next room.”
The child is not related to Gomez or his girlfriend, KTRK reported.
A Harris County prosecutor gave an update in court on the conditions of the two victims, saying Gomez’s girlfriend was undergoing surgery, and the child was unable to have the bullet removed from his knee, the outlet reported.
It is unclear from court records if the child was in the same apartment or a neighboring apartment.
Gomez’s bail is set at $200,000, court records show. He is due back in court Oct. 17.
