15-year-old threatens ‘finishing the job’ of Apalachee High School shooting, GA cops say
A Georgia teen is accused of threatening to commit a school shooting hours after a gunman killed four people at Apalachee High School, deputies said.
The 15-year-old boy, who deputies didn’t name, was arrested Wednesday, Sept. 4, after statements he made on a bus ride from one school to another in Jackson County, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
Witnesses said the teen made comments about the shootings at Apalachee High School and that he was “planning on finishing the job” to shoot up a school in neighboring Jackson County, according to deputies.
He was interviewed by detectives and later charged, although authorities didn’t say what charges the teen faces.
He remains in custody at the Youth Detention Center in Gainesville, deputies said.
The threat came the same day Colt Gray, 14, was accused of shooting and killing two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. At least nine others were hospitalized with injuries.
Authorities identified the victims as:
Mason Schermerhorn, 14
Christian Angulo, 14
Richard Aspinwall, 39
Cristina Irimie, 53
Gray was charged with four counts of felony murder, according to the GBI. His father, 54-year-old Colin Gray, has also been charged in connection to the deadly shooting after investigators said he “knowingly allowed” his son to have a weapon.
The father faces multiple charges including two counts of second-degree murder, the GBI said.
“This is a very difficult time for students and parents, and many are afraid,” the bureau said in a statement.
“You’ve likely seen reports of incidents of other students making threats today at various schools around the state. In each of these incidents, police took charges and made arrests as we take each matter seriously,” it said.
Authorities didn’t release additional details but said the investigation is ongoing.
Jackson County is about a 20-mile drive northwest from Athens.
