A dog believed to have been bred and dumped in Connecticut had given birth and was without her babies — until a local rescue organization stepped in to find them.

The gray pit bull was found alone in Waterbury and was eventually caught the evening of Aug. 28 by local residents who had been feeding her and giving her water, NBC Connecticut reported.

She came under the care of BARC Connecticut, a nonprofit advocacy group that rescues and fosters local dogs in the state, on Aug. 29 after she was lured out of the woods by the residents, a BARC CT volunteer told McClatchy News on Sept. 2.

“She was terrified and desperate to find her babies,” the volunteer said.

Later on Aug. 29, the mama dog was reunited with five of her babies, according to BARC CT, which had offered a cash reward to anyone who helped reunite the mother with her puppies so they could “nurse properly.”

“There was no way to hold back the tears….It was one of the most emotional moments,” the organization wrote in a Facebook post that shared a video of the reunion.

In the footage, the mama is seen walking up to a basket with five of her pups — three brown puppies and two black puppies. She first sniffs one of her chocolate-colored pups and then goes to sniff the other four.

That’s when her tail starts wagging and the puppies get excited. All five pups tried to crawl out of the basket and to their mother, the video shows.

“A community came together for this dog and her babies like we’ve never seen,” BARC CT wrote on Facebook.

Now the mother dog’s unofficial name is “Mama,” the BARC CT volunteer told McClatchy News.

“It’s fitting as she’s the best Mama even with all that she’s been through. We love her so much,” the volunteer said.

The mama dog was starving before she was rescued, and “the puppies were in horrible shape,” the volunteer added.

The reunion came after a woman had turned the five puppies over to BARC CT, according to the volunteer.

Now the mother and her puppies are in the care of a foster family, according to BARC CT.

BARC CT said there may be more of the mama’s puppies out there.

“Without any proof of any truly missing, we hope she gave birth to five and we have her whole litter. We’d hate to think even one more is out there missing his or her mama,” the volunteer told McClatchy News.

The group is asking anyone with information about any additional puppies to contact the Waterbury Police Department.

BARC CT said there is a growing issue of breeding female dogs, dumping them and selling their babies in Connecticut and beyond.
