Need an updated COVID vaccine or flu shot? Here’s where you can get them

With flu season around the corner, many are ready to roll up their sleeves for the annual shot.

New COVID-positive tests have also surged nearly 18 percent in the last two weeks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, amid a push to get newly updated vaccines into arms.

Immunizations are the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones, experts say, and some pharmacies have already begun rolling out doses targeting new variants of COVID-19 and the flu.

Some people might consider getting both shots to stave off co-infection.

“It is possible to get sick with more than one respiratory virus at the same time,” according to the CDC. “This includes being sick with flu and COVID-19. It is also possible to be sick with multiple flu viruses, like influenza A and B, at the same time.”

Most insurance plans cover preventative vaccinations, and both shots are little to no cost to those without insurance.

Here’s where to find this year’s updated COVID-19 and flu shots:

CVS Pharmacy

Patients can get the updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 and flu vaccines at CVS and Minute Clinic locations nationwide, the pharmacy chain said Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Appointments can be made ahead of time, but walk-ins are also welcome.

The shots are also available at CVS locations in Target and Shnucks supermarkets seven days a week, including nights and weekends, according to a news release.

“Access to preventive vaccinations is critical to keeping our communities healthy,” said Dr. Sree Chaguturu, executive vice president and chief medical officer for CVS Health.

Need to vaccinate the whole family? No problem.

With the online scheduler, customers can make appointments for up to four people at once, CVS said. Multiple vaccinations, like both COVID-19 and flu shots, can also be scheduled in one appointment.

Walgreens

The updated COVID-19 vaccine and flu shot are now available at Walgreens, according to its website.

“Individuals can schedule appointments now, with available appointments starting at select stores on August 28 for patients 12 years of age and older,” a Walgreens spokesperson told McClatchy News.

Patients are encouraged to call ahead to ensure availability of the COVID-19 vaccine before heading to the pharmacy.

Availability may vary from store to store, but the spokesperson said the updated doses should be available at Walgreens nationwide by Sept. 6.

Kroger (and Kroger family stores)

Customers can roll up their sleeves for flu and COVID-19 shots at Kroger family stores.

“Due to the evolving nature of the virus, the CDC recommends receiving an updated COVID-19 vaccine to ensure optimal immune protection against serious consequences of the SARS-CoV-2 virus,” according to a statement posted on the grocery chain’s website.

“Our pharmacies and clinics are ready to administer the vaccine as soon as doses are delivered to our facilities.”

Patients are encouraged to call their local Kroger to ensure the updated doses are available before scheduling an appointment.

Flu vaccinations are also available, but Kroger didn’t say if they’re the updated version.

McClatchy News reached out to Kroger on Aug. 28 and was awaiting a response.

Walmart

Walmart customers can get the 2024-2025 flu vaccine, but those looking for the COVID-19 shot will have to wait a bit longer.

“Walmart Pharmacies will have the COVID-19 vaccine in August,” a statement posted on its website reads as of August 28. “Check back here for updates about scheduling an appointment.”

Customers can schedule a flu shot, or do a walk-in.
