Police in Illinois are investigating after they say a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed after soccer practice.

Around 5 p.m. Aug. 19, a teen, later identified as Juan Salgado, was driving when a truck pulled up and someone inside began shooting, according to Chicago police.

Salgado was shot in his shoulder and taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

“On what should have been just another ordinary evening after soccer practice, his life was cut short by a senseless act of gun violence,” a GoFundMe page said. “Juan Sebastian was not affiliated with any gangs, nor were any of his close friends. His passing serves as a devastating reminder that violence can strike even those who live their lives with kindness, integrity, and love.”

Family members told WLS that Salgado was driving a friend home who showed up to soccer practice sick.

“He knew the friend was not feeling well to go back home, and even though he knew he shouldn’t go there, he did because he felt it was the right way to do for his friend,” Salgado’s uncle, Sabastian Salgado, told the news outlet.

Salgado was described as family-oriented and a great son, brother and friend, according to the GoFundMe page. He was one week away from starting his senior year in high school and becoming soccer captain.

“Through the touch of the ball, he formed lasting friendships and built a community that loved and respected him as much as he did them,” the GoFundMe page said.

Police say no one is in custody and detectives are still investigating.
