A mom accidentally ran over her 12-year-old daughter while dropping her off for the first day of school, Florida officials said.

The girl was flown to a hospital in critical condition, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Aug. 12, the woman let her daughter out of the SUV on the street outside of Booker Middle School in Sarasota and the student dropped her school supplies, troopers said in a news release.

She started to crawl under the car to pick up the pens and markers, but her mom didn’t see her, officials said.

The mother drove forward and hit the girl, according to troopers.

First responders flew her to a hospital in St. Petersburg, where she was reported to be in critical condition, troopers told McClatchy News on Aug. 12.

“The school district encourages all families to follow district and school safety protocols and use the designated student pickup and drop-off areas on school campuses,” a spokesperson for Sarasota County Schools said.

The spokesperson said the incident happened off the school’s property.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.

Sarasota is on Florida’s Gulf Coast, about a 40-mile drive south from St. Petersburg.
