Inmates save correctional officer who choked and passed out, Tennessee sheriff says
When a correctional officer began choking at a Tennessee jail, a group of inmates stepped in to save her life.
The Nashville-Davidson County Sheriff commended their “decisive actions” during the medical emergency in an Aug. 7 statement.
The inmates at the Downtown Detention Center saw the officer “in distress” and rushed to help her, Sheriff Daron Hall said.
One inmate successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver and cleared the obstruction so the officer could breathe. But moments later, she passed out, officials said.
The “vigilant” inmates remained by her side and attended to her until medical personnel arrived, according to the sheriff.
Surveillance footage from inside the jail shows the inmates helping the woman and flagging down help.
“This event highlights compassion and courage can be found in all corners of our community, including within our correctional facilities,” Hall said, commending their bravery.
The officer is recovering “thanks to the immediate and effective response of the inmates,” according to the sheriff.
“Their quick response not only saved a life but also exemplifies the potential for positive actions in all circumstances,” Hall said.
