A “beloved” senior dog was separated from her owner in the hospital — then came a heartwarming reunion.

“On our end it was big smiles all around and we are sure there were big smiles back at the VA hospital when Trixie and her dad were reunited,” the Mississippi Animal Rescue League wrote in a Facebook post.

The good news came after a “hero” stepped in to help Saturday, Aug. 3. Trixie’s owner was ready to leave the hospital in Jackson, but the shelter was closed for the rest of the weekend.

“The only problem was he was not leaving without his beloved Trixie,” the shelter wrote. “He was very clear with the staff that he would wait until he had Trixie. He had no transportation to our shelter.”

That’s when Lt. Ricky Davis of the VA Police hatched a special plan. A photo shows he picked up Trixie from the shelter, going “above and beyond” to bring the dog and her owner back together.

“She’s his world,” shelter spokesperson Debra Boswell told McClatchy News in a phone interview.

The shelter said Trixie and her owner, who served in the military, were separated when he went to the medical center. The dog needed a place to stay while he received care, so the shelter took her in.

“She’s a little gray around the muzzle, so we know it would be hard for her for the first few days,” Boswell said.

Boswell said the Chihuahua mix was eating at the shelter but believes she was scared and confused to be without her owner. After days of waiting, it was time to celebrate the joyful reunion.

“We were thrilled to be able to help Trixie’s dad, and certainly we appreciate his service to our country,” Boswell said. “We try to go above and beyond for as many people as we can, but especially veterans have our heart.”
