An Iowa man kicked off his Fourth of July with a bang in the form of a shocking lottery win, lottery officials said.

Andrew Broadston of Montezuma bought a $30,000 Crossword ticket while on his way to a family celebration, according to IA Lottery officials.

The $30,000 Crossword game is a $3 instant win scratch game with a top prize of $30,000, according to the Iowa lottery.

Broadston said he noticed he was completing more words than usual.

“Words just kept appearing for me, and I thought, ‘alright, maybe it’s a $1,000 winner,’” he told lottery officials.

It was only after he scanned his ticket in the store that he realized he’d won $30,000.

“I was just in awe and shock of it,” the winner said.

He told lottery officials he plans to pay off his wife’s vehicle and take a family vacation with his winnings.

Broadston bought his ticket at Casey’s in Grinnell, officials said.

Grinnell is about a 55-mile drive east from Des Moines.
